The survival of the democracy in India depends a lot on the decision of the Constituent Assembly in adopting the universal adult franchise. The independence movement went for the Westminster form of democracy that followed the model of including the demands of backward tribes and the Dalits. The book brings to out knowledge that at the time of partition, India has a strong middle class, political structure with civil and military bureaucracy unlike Pakistan. The debate is that the democracy of a neighboring country suffocated the spirit of democracy.
